First Pike Death from COVID-19

By Dakota Hendricks

MILFORD — Pike County Coroner Chris Brighton said a 70-year-old male died from COVID-19 on March 25th in Lake Adventure.

In response, Lake Adventure has taken steps to limit exposure to their workers and residents, closing their maintenance yard, having their office staff work from home, barring guests from visiting, closing common areas, encouraging quarantine for anyone coming from New York City, etc.

The Pike County Commissioners issued a statement on March 25th urging anyone traveling from the New York metropolitan area to self-quarantine for 14 days in response to guidelines from the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

Dingman Township Fire Chief Mark O'Brien said the Department responded to the Lake Adventure incident along with other departments and followed procedures outlined by the PA Dept. of Health and the CDC including proper use of protective gear and decontamination.

O'Brien asks that the public continue to follow the guidelines laid out by the CDC and the PA Department of Health to isolate and reminds those who are moving into secondary homes in the county that they need to self isolate for 14 days. O'Brien said this is a rural community with limited resources, and it may be better for those coming into Pike County to remain in their primary homes as they may have better access to medical facilities and resources there.

The Dingman Fire Department volunteers are currently not exhibiting symptoms of the virus, and O'Brien is confident in the County plan to respond and said Emergency Management Director Tim Knapp is keeping the Department well stocked with information, supplies and protective gear.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health website on March 26th there are 1,687 cases in Pennsylvania, 15 in Pike County. Seventeen people have died in PA so far from the virus.
